I never set out to create a body of work of cemetery photos; it just evolved. I used to do a lot of traveling and among other subjects, just somehow ended up shooting cemeteries wherever I went. And now, it's only sporadically that I find the time, opportunity, and initiative to do a shoot. But I'm sure it's something that I'll continue into my old age. It's certainly been something that's taken me on many adventures to places where I never would have gone otherwise. I hold many fond memories behind these photos that aren't apparent in them from a week long passionate affair to being chased by a herd of cattle with a new friend.
I'm not sure there's any big message behind these photos, but I hope they hint at the mysteries of existence. To me, perhaps they convey something of mortality and the preciousness of life; of the vast scale of time in which a human life passes so quickly; of how we're all really alone even when in the closest company of others. In any case, I hope everyone who views these photos takes away something positive from their own unique perspective of them and life.
Technique
Aside from scanning, adjusting levels, and creating duotones, there is no computer manipulation of these photos. Nothing is composited; the photos actually record a real place as it was. Each photo in the gallery is accompanied by information on the type of camera used. The only "rules" I have are that I don't document famous or recognizable graves and I don't like any words in the photos, the later of which is actually quite difficult to achieve in a cemetery. The more recent photos have been done with pinhole cameras. I really like the dreamlike painterly atmosphere they create. It's sort of difficult to gauge framing and exposure though. I'd like to figure out how to convert a digital camera to a pinhole. If anyone has experience with this, please contact me.
Contact
I'd like to hear from you, so feel free to contact me via email. I try to respond to all emails, but I won't respond to the following:
- You are trying to locate a specific grave. I'm not some kind of cemetery database.
- You want to use a photo for the cover of your band's album. Absolutely no way.
- You consider yourself a vampire, are obsessed with vampires, or want to mention anything at all related to vampires. Put down the Anne Rice and get a life.
Also, please respect that these photo are but a very small aspect of my life and not indicative of any sort of goth or related lifestyle.
